CHARLOTTESVILLE — With football season finished, the attention of Virginia fans shifts to the men’s basketball team. The performance on Monday evening might leave those fans following the football team’s coaching search more than a basketball squad that continues to appear like a work in progress.

Virginia fell apart in the second half of Monday’s 69-66 loss to Penn State (5-2) in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge at John Paul Jones Arena while displaying the defensive breakdowns that continue to irk first-year Coach Tony Bennett.

“We have a small margin for error, you all see that,” Bennett said. “We have to eliminate those breakdowns to give ourselves a chance.”

A seven-point halftime lead slipped to a 12-point second-half deficit. Penn State’s offense was stymied by Bennett’s defense in the first half, but jumped off to a 13-2 run in the first five minutes of the second half….
