Jones: Improved Big Ten looks competitive

CHICAGO – You could use all sorts of gauges of the Big Ten’s strength in men’s basketball this season. But an indirect one might be the best.

The Michigan Wolverines have not one but two NBA prospects returning to John Beilein’s team freshly ranked No. 15 in The Associated Press preseason poll. Big junior guard Manny Harris, a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore, and 6-8 senior power forward DeShawn Sims are about the surest bets in the conference to be chosen high in the draft.

And where was Michigan picked in the preseason conference poll? We don’t know because the Big Ten doesn’t release anyone other than the top three. And the Wolverines weren’t in it….
