Collegian: Babb to play key role

Chris Babb thinks he was ready last year.

Playing behind Stanley Pringle and Danny Morr-issey, however, the sophomore guard didn’t get the chance to find a niche in coach Ed DeChellis’ scheme.

But with Pringle and Morrissey gone, Babb knows the opportunity is there this year.

“It’s really exciting,” Babb said. “A lot of stuff was building up last year, and I was ready to get on the court. Now I’ve got the opportunity given to me, and I have to take advantage of it.”

DeChellis said Babb is in a group of three — along with fellow sophomore Cammeron Woodyard and freshman Tim Frazier — that will have to replace the 18.1 points per game put up by the two graduated seniors.

But playing in a Big Ten conference that is loaded at the shooting guard position, Babb, who last season averaged just more than 10 minutes and 3.3 points per game, noted he would have to help replace more than just offense.

“Defense is going to be very important this year,” Babb said. “Especially with players like Manny Harris, Evan Turner and Durrell Summers. Players like that — you have to guard them every night in the Big Ten. That’s tough.”
