Centre Daily Times | Battle set to sign with PSU

Centre Daily Times | 11/08/2006 | Battle set to sign with PSU:

“He didn’t get much attention from most big schools even before he broke his ankle the summer before his junior year, and probably less after that.

“One program, though, kept in touch with Talor Battle throughout. That as much as any reason is why Penn State is set to add one of its most promising recruits in recent memory as college basketball’s early signing period begins today.

” ‘The other schools weren’t really there,’ Battle said. ‘(Penn State was) there even through my injuries and everything.’

“When the ankle healed, Battle, a 5-foot-10, instant-offense guard from Albany, N.Y., averaged 29 points per game during his junior season at Bishop Maginn High School. The Nittany Lions offered a scholarship in February, and Battle accepted with an oral commitment.

“Then came the summer, and the schools who hadn’t given Battle much thought began to change their opinions as Battle led the Albany City Rocks to a third-place finish (in a 138-team field) at the 17-and-under AAU national championships in Orlando, Fla.

“Suddenly, Battle — whose only previous suitors had been Massachusetts and Siena — was receiving interest from Clemson, Oklahoma, Dayton and Virginia Tech. …”
