With his team clinging to what had only a few possessions earlier had been a double-digit lead late in Monday’s game at Virginia, Penn State coach Ed DeChellis took his big guys off the free-throw line so they wouldn’t be tempted to foul, stop the clock and give the Cavaliers a chance to cut into the lead at the stripe.
Tim Frazier and Talor Battle apparently missed the memo.
“I pulled the guys off the line so we don’t foul,” DeChellis said, “and I got two guards in there fouling.”
DeChellis raised three daughters and spent some time during the Thanksgiving break with his 2-year-old granddaughter, Sophia. He knows all about growing pains, which should come in handy this season.
For a lot of college basketball coaches in a lot of seasons, November and December is less about coaching and more about teaching, and not all of the lessons come during practice. This is one of those years for DeChellis and Penn State…
