Philadelphia native Andrew Jones played three games in the Palestra last November. Penn State’s then-sophomore forward, a bit too anxious and playing just a bit too fast, picked up three early fouls in both the Nittany Lions’ 85-73 defeat of Penn and their 77-72 loss to Rhode Island in the Philly Hoop Group Classic, finishing with totals of 23 minutes and five points in those two games.
In the consolation game of the Classic against Towson, though, Jones avoided foul trouble and had his way against the Tigers’ overmatched frontcourt, scoring eight points and grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds in 27 minutes of a 78-54 Penn State win.
“To me, that was a game where things started to come together for me a little bit,” said Jones, whose strong second half was one of the key elements in Penn State’s 27-win season.
This afternoon, Jones will again play in front of a hometown crowd when the Nittany Lions 5-2 face Temple 5-2 at 4 p.m. in Philadelphia’s Liacouras Center. And again, he will look to let the game come to him, this time against a formidable Owls front line….
