CDT: Lions muscle past Eagles in non-conference finale

By Jeff Rice

UNIVERSITY PARK — A lot of the shots that had clanged off of various parts of the rim for much of the semester went down for Penn State during its last two games in the Bryce Jordan Center, both the Nittany Lions’ 104-57 dismantling of Gardner-Webb on Saturday as well as Monday’s 76-57 defeat of American.

And the Nittany Lions 8-4, who wrapped up their non-conference season with a businesslike if not entirely well-rounded performance, know they will have to make shots to have a chance at winning just about any game on the Big Ten slate, which opens Dec. 29 at Minnesota.

But in a league in which the style of play is so often described by words such as “grinding” or “hard-nosed,” they know they will have to play some defense, too.
