For the majority of his first five seasons at Penn State, when facing a skilled perimeter player, head coach Ed DeChellis countered with a zone defense. Last season, he countered with quick-footed guard Stanley Pringle.

The Nittany Lions 6-3, who host Virginia Tech 7- 1 at 7 p.m. tonight in the Bryce Jordan Center, are again a man-to-man team this season, but one without a shutdown defender in their backcourt.

“We’re still searching,” DeChellis said Friday. “Some days we’ve got somebody who does a pretty good job, others not so well. We only have four guys in terms of guards … we’ll have to do it by committee.”

That committee’s chief task this evening is containing Hokies guard Malcolm Delaney, a 6-foot-3 junior who has scored at least 20 points in five of Tech’s eight games, including 32 in a loss to Temple and 31 in a win over Georgia, and averages 20.9 on the season….
