Penn State junior point guard Talor Battle and by extension, his Nittany Lions’ teammates, had plenty of questions to answer coming into this season following an NIT Championship last year.
Without the scoring threats of both Stanley Pringle and Jamelle Cornley, would Battle still be effective? Would his teammates provide enough to keep teams from keying in on him? Could he supply the leadership role vacated by the departure of Cornley?
For the casual Penn State basketball fan, success this season will be measured simply by whether head coach Ed DeChellis and his team can work their way into the NCAA Tournament. Yet, a more realistic outlook to this season is whether or not the Lions can battle no pun intended through their best non-conference schedule in years, not to mention a Big Ten that is quickly shaping up to be one of the toughest in the country. Battle has picked up right where he left off last season.
Monday night’s win at Virginia in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge was definitely a step in the right direction, and, not coincidentally, Battle was there at the forefront of the Lions’ success….
