CDT: Lions gear for ACC foe

If early-season rankings and big-game performances are any indication, this could be the first year the Big Ten wins the 11-year-old ACC-Big Ten Challenge, which begins at 7 p.m. tonight when Penn State (4-2) visits Virginia (4-2) at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.

But the Nittany Lions, who have won their last two games in the Challenge, are playing for more than their conference tonight.

“We have to go beat somebody,” Penn State coach Ed DeChellis said. “It’s important for us to play well, we’ll be on national TV (ESPN2) … this game’s big for a lot of reasons.”

Penn State missed its first chance to generate buzz outside of the Bryce Jordan Center, losing two of three games in the Charleston Classic. The Cavaliers, who lost by five to Stanford and by 17 to South Florida, are unlikely to finish near the top of the ACC this season but will present the toughest test to date for the Nittany Lions….
