Dave Jones:
The road trip from hell continues today for the Penn State Nittany Lions. After Tuesday night’s 68-51 loss at Illinois, the Lions still cannot get a flight out of any nearby airport in the wake of the Midwestern blizzard. So, they’re retracing their tire tracks from yesterday and busing 204 miles back to Evansville, Ind., where hopefully they can catch a charter flight this evening that will get them home by 7 EST.
Senior wing forward Jeff Brooks, who has been the Lions’ best player in many games this season, suffered a dislocated right shoulder late in the first half that doomed the Lions’ chances against the Illini. I was told by PSU sports medicine director Wayne Sebastianelli last night that such injuries are highly variable but it usually requires a 2-week minimum rehab stint. Sebastianelli was not speaking of Brooks’ case in specific, only in general.
But PSU trainer Jon Salazer has told sports information director Brian Siegrist that a return of Brooks is actually possible on Sunday noon when the Lions play host to Michigan. That seems optimistic but it entirely depends upon how much damage was done to the surrounding bone and tendons. A magnetic resonance imaging scan is scheduled for Brooks in State College when the team returns and much more will be known when those results can be studied.
