Jeff Rice: Chambers, Lions shopping in bulk

Jeff Rice at 247sports:

Penn State coach Patrick Chambers can’t talk specifically about recruits — or their teammates — until they’ve signed, but he did discuss in general terms his thoughts on mining the same territories for multiple prospects.

“It doesn’t hurt to try to get a group of kids,” Chambers said during the Coaches Caravan stop in Langhorne. “That never hurts. And sometimes, especially with the trend that I’ve been seeing, it seems like kids want to go and play together, and trail blaze, do something special together.

“But I also think it’s really important to recruit the kids as individuals. And know that we might not get those other kids, but we’re gonna take this kid. And I’m damn happy about that.”

Chambers also talked about the importance of continuing to recruit the Philadelphia region hard. Four of the last 12 players who have signed with or committed to the Nittany Lions are from the area.

“We’re starting to work on the fights that maybe some of the prior (Penn State) coaches didn’t want to get in those battles,” he said. “We’re going to lose a lot of those. We get more ‘Nos’ than ‘Yeses’. But I’m not afraid to get in those backyard brawls and fights to get a kid, especially if I think the kid’s the right fit for us and I get it if he’s not. But we can’t fear that anymore. So we’ve got to get in it against Maryland and Villanova and Georgetown and Pitt and St. John’s.

“For us to be successful on a consistent basis, that’s the type of talent we need.”
