Wish I had posted last night so I could be on the record as OK with ED getting another season if he makes to Saturday.  He did not which was one of my last qualifications for keeping him.  (6 wins in big 10 and trending up being the other)

We need to move on quickly or have a plan to make change quickly in mid season next year.  Giving Dan Earl a shot for half a season would be OK.  But either way we need to put ED behind us and move on.  The only variable is time I am afraid.

If we wait another year to make a coaching change, our new coach will not have any scholarships to give out (assuming ED fills the remainder this year) and he will be stuck scrambling for juco's or mediocre high school kids to play here.  It will be like 2003-2004 all over again.  You have to assume that there will be some last minute transfers and de-commits too.

We have Talor for another year, we have Taran too.  Grab a new coach now and let him recruit some better talent for 2011 with those three open scholarships.  I want our new coach's players in this program as soon as possible.  I feel that if we wait until the 2010-2011 season is over and we do not make the tournament, then we simply repeated the awful Jerry Dunn/Ed Dechellis transition.

If we think it is time for a change (which I do), then we really need to do it now.

I have come to the conclusion that Ed is just not a very good tournament coach and last years NIT doesn't count because you have a few days to prepare for you next opponent. Ed is 7-18 in tournament type style games (did not count NIT or those opening games in the Philly classic because those games had prep time between games.
To be fair, saying that certain tournament games shouldn't count is like saying Ed's first two (or four, or five) seasons shouldn't count, or that this season shouldn't count.

Dismissing some results in favor of another seems like a distinctly biased approach to making an evaluation.

I say "Yes" considering 7 years of criteria. Ed has had a fair chance (7 years) and the results speak for themselves.

Well even I add other tourney games it makes it 13-18

Out of respect for the team, I wanted to wait until the season was over to state my position.

It's time for a change.  Seven years was plenty of time to at least become respectable.  All of last year's hard work has been wasted, and there is no way this team can improve so drastically next year that they will be able to make the dance.

I'm sorry, Coach DeChellis.  You're a great man and represent the University well.  Thank you for your service, but please step aside for your own sake and for the sake of the program.

Spot on Nation. 7 years 95-123 and 32-87 in conf is not acceptable. After putting a year together like last year and then putting a year togtether like this in year 7 there is no reason to continue on. No knock against Ed as a person ,he's obvioulsy a great guy that's put 110% into this thing but it's jut not happening.

Once again, I have to say this.............for as much as I was thoroughly disgusted watching that game last night, I feel Ed should return next year, with the following ultimatum:  with a FULL squad returning (even though it was a terrible year), the final goal will be making the NCAA tourny!  Making the NIT will not be acceptable!

Pretty plain and simple.

If Curley is going to replace DeChellis, now is the time, not after next year.

If Penn State goes 9-9 or 10-8 in the Big Ten next year, just falls shy of an NCAA bid, and then makes a good run in the NIT, there will be stronger sentiment to stick with ED coming off a winning season.  It's hard to sell the idea that we're going to fire you just because you miss the NCAA Tourney if you otherwise have a solid year.

A new coach now would at least re-ignite some fan and media interest in an experienced and somewhat talented squad next year.  All the momentum of the 27-11 season has been squandered in terms of ticket sales and recruiting attractiveness for '10-'11 if DeChellis and Co. continue.

The job will be more attractive now with a promising squad returning next year than it would be after next season when Battle, DJ, and Drew Jones graduate.  A new coach now can get off on the right foot with the fans with a strong season next year, and have more leeway with fans than DeChellis would have if there's a stumble in '11-'12.

A new coach will want to have open scholarship slots to work with to build his own on- and off-court team personality.  The optimum number of scholarships is available next year, and a coaching change now likely won't blow Taran Buie out of the Penn State fold.

I like DeChellis, but you just can't step this far backward in your seventh year.  However, mediocrity in MBB isn't killing Curley's budget, and I think he'll be disposed to give additional chances to a guy who works so hard and represents Penn State so well everywhere but in the W-L column.

I imagine we'll know by the middle of next week whether DeChellis survives.

A lot of you guys are hanging the coach out to dry. I simply won't. I agree that this year has been disappointing, i'm not blind to where we need to be. Some say Ed probably will stay, but not many (if any) actually say they'd like to see coach return next year. This is understandable, but I believe Coach DeChellis can lead us to where we need to be.

Northwestern didn't let Carmody go after all those subpar seasons, but this year NW has 20 wins for the first time in their school history. Tom Crean had two poor seasons for Indiana. Is he gunna be canned? And Indiana certainly has a much more storied basketball history than PSU.

The guys calling for coach to be canned have expectations like PSU is a Duke or something. Look at North Carolina this year. 16-16, lost to Georgia Tech last night in the ACC tournament, a team that PSU beat in the non conference last year. Is Roy Williams going to be canned?

I mean, yeah DeChellis's record isn't that great, but look at his last 5 seasons...(i'm not ignoring his first 2 seasons, but his first two seasons were very difficult with a very short bench and a lot of Dunn's leftovers)

2005–2006    Penn State    15–15    6–10    T–8th    NIT Opening Round
2006–2007    Penn State    11–19    2–14    T–10th    –
2007–2008    Penn State    15–16    7–11    7th       –
2008–2009    Penn State    27-11    10-8       4th       NIT Champions
2009–2010    Penn State    11-20    3-15       11th      –

79-81 in his last 5 seasons. Two .500 seasons, two sub-par seasons, and one great season. Based on that, to me it looks like coach has improved PSU from where PSU was in Dunn's last two years. PSU has more talent and depth then they had than PSU had in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. These records are respectable. It could be worse than 79-81.

Indiana's been worse than .500 in Crean's last two years. Sometimes when you play in a competitive league, you can have a bad year. It happens. I wish some people would come out and support the coach. There were no seniors on the team. Lets see what coach can do next year. There's no guarantee that someone else can do as good as coach can do next year.

I respect your defense of ED but c'mon man.

Crean was left wit NOTHING when he came in as coach. Actually less than nothing (didn't Indiana have violations?). UNC won the National Championship last year... and this is the worst season for UNC under Williams, and its still better than 4 out of PSU's last 5 seasons... HA!

You called last year "great". PSU didn't even make the NCAA tournament... far from "great".

Northwestern still hasn't made the NCAA tournament. So what if they won 20 games? 7-11 in the B10 with 4 BAD losses.

Most people on here admit we need a coaching change, the only variable is WHEN. You're saying we don't need one? Wow..

This is my point. DeChellis was left with nothing when he came in as coach. If you give Crean a pass for his first two years, then give DeChellis a pass for his first two years. At least Indiana has a bench.

Actually less than nothing (didn't Indiana have violations?).

PSU runs a clean program. They may not have winning records all the time, but it's a clean program. Look at USC right now banned from the postseasons.

UNC won the National Championship last year... and this is the worst season for UNC under Williams, and its still better than 4 out of PSU's last 5 seasons... HA!

PSU won the national championship last season too. PSU had an NCAA-worthy season and won all their postseason games. You can laugh if you want and call me crazy if you want, but PSU and UNC last year were co-national champions. They both had NCAA tournament resumes and both won out their postseason tournaments. You can't do any better than that.

You called last year "great". PSU didn't even make the NCAA tournament... far from "great".

Sorry, PSU was a great team last season. And even if you only think they were good, how can you say they were far from great? Was MSU great last year? Was PSU winning at MSU last year a fluke? Was PSU sweeping Illinois last year a fluke? Was PSU beating Baylor and ND a fluke? Was PSU beating Florida at Florida a fluke? Come on, man. Get with the program.

Northwestern still hasn't made the NCAA tournament. So what if they won 20 games? 7-11 in the B10 with 4 BAD losses.

Northwestern also lost Kevin Coble for the season and still won 20 games. That's pretty impressive. Northwestern is probably an NCAA tourney team with Coble healthy.

Most people on here admit we need a coaching change, the only variable is WHEN. You're saying we don't need one? Wow..

Yeah wow. Fine, rag on me. I don't care. Say i'm anything. I simply think coach has improved PSU basketball since he's been here. We have better athletes, a respectable record in his last 5 seasons. It's marginal improvement, but still improvement nonetheless in my estimation. I respect anyone who is anywhere on the spectrum, but it'd sure be nice to see some members show a little support for coach realizing how difficult his task is.

Come let us know where Crean is after year 7 at Indy. I'm willing to bet PSU we'll be looking up at Crean (which they are already)and he'll probably have at least one if not more NCAA appearances.

So you go from Carmody, to Crean to Williams?

With a few exceptions (myself included), I don't see how most people haven't been damn patient with ED thus far. Questioning the comparisons to Carmody are more than reasonable. But you seem to be using Crean and Williams as overblown examples to make a point.
