Penn State Basketball / Re: 2015-16 OOC opponents thread
« on: Yesterday at 11:31 AM »
These were the days when a handful of the games were on WITF, the local PBS station.

I think I remember a Pittsburgh channel picking up some PSU games during that era!

It isn't in our best interest to play Nova right now. The last thing we want to do is play a team we compete with for a lot of recruits and lose to them consistently. We are better off separating for now

I agree!!

It's great to be back,  :)

Big Ten's way of developing more of its footprint in the NYC area

Good point. I agree! It's just the league "doing it's job!"

I DO consider what other schools have done. I just think PSU would be a good option for SOME transfers.............. not all.
Besides, there seems to be a large amount of transfers these days!!!!!!!!

To echo a few earlier reports, not yet official but Penn State will in fact host DePaul in Big Ten/Big East basketball challenge

Too many "challenges" for me!!!!!!!!!!!

I will say it again................I think we are the prefect situation for a transfer wanting to immediately start and be the primary scorer in a power conference! Those opportunities do not grow on trees!

That's if the transfer actually wants that. Some would rather go to a program with a pedigree of getting to the NBA or to the NCAA Tournament.

I see the key word as "some!"    Some surely may want the pedigree program approach.
My point is some might like the PSU situation!
Remember, PSU has recently produced Frazier and Newbill.

Just named the NBDL RoY and MVP.  Congrats Tim!

WOW...........Congrats to Tim!!

P.S. PSU CAN produce quality professional players!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We HAVE recruited and still are recruiting top 100 HS kids! Are/were not these kids being recruited hard by top programs?
IF we are ever going to be a winning Bigten11121314 program should we not attempt to recruit high end players, HS and/or transfers!!
I will say it again................I think we are the prefect situation for a transfer wanting to immediately start and be the primary scorer in a power conference! Those opportunities do not grow on trees!
Also, isn't it standard procedure to be recruiting more than one player at the same time for a given scholarship??

9
I've heard us mentioned with almost no grad transfers so far this year.  Is that shocking to anyone else besides me?

I'm surprised also. We seem to be the prefect situation for an experienced player.

Sounds like a good plan. I wish him luck. He has been my favorite player the last couple of years!

I'll be rooting for VMI while Dan Earl is head coach there, but, as tjb noted, it's a tough place to win.  Duggar Baucom was there 10 years and had some success running a high-scoring offense.  Baucom left a couple weeks ago for The Citadel, which seems like a rather lateral move, albeit to a larger, more attractive town.

It's an example of the risks coaches must often take to move up in the profession.  VMI Basketball has an all-time .375 win percentage.  It's a school with a storied history, but not in basketball.

I remember their 75-76 tournament team. Nice team. They won a couple of games. I believe they were lead by a Pittsburgh City league kid (Carter) who was a heck of a player. NBA draft pick!
Also, I think they made the dance the next year!!

Great idea. Long time in coming.
How will this increase attendance??  Don't know. Sounds like Cupcake Man's  8)   department!!   ;)

Good article!!
I will try to be positive! The NCAA game has evolved (for the most part) out of the "flop" era. The "flop" era was a worst possible situation! Thus there is still hope! Refs must continue to reward the player "attacking" the basket.
I would like to see an evolution back to the "motion" offense. Screens and picks away from the ball with fast passing ball movement. Today's "on the ball" screen type of play leads to lots of one player dribble dribble dribble 30 feet from the basket! and standing around watching for the remainder of the players.

OPENING DAY!!!!!!!!    :)

Our weekly Happy Hour group is meeting today to watch the game at our favorite watering hole.
We will make our selections for the yearly "predict the # of Pirate wins" contest. My wife has won the last two years so smarts must run in the family.  ;)

The line up on the field looks very good. I'm worried about the pitching. Over the course of the season I think we see lots of new pitching faces!!

Just doing my small part:

http://www.usab.com/youth/news/2011/06/the-ultimate-guide-to-playing-center.aspx

As we all know, our coaches have no idea about these drills.

/sarcasm

Good stuff! I like this kind of teaching/coaching stuff. I went to a bunch of coaching clinics in my young days.
In reality I would guess most/all college level coaches use good coaching techniques. Does teaching/coaching good big man techniques make every college big guy a quality player? No need to answer that question!!

16
Are you serious or joking?  PSU has a track record of developing NBA talent?  Calvin Booth was over a decade ago and Frazier has signed a few 10 day contracts out of the D-League.   PSU is the opposite of what you said.

When I said developing "star" players I meant college star players! Playing lots of minutes, accumulating lots of stats, getting lots of attention!
I would guess a grad player's game will not change that much in one year BUT getting lots of attention in the Bigten11121314 (A very BIG STAGE) can be a BIG THING for a future pro career.
THIS can be achieved at good ole PSU!!

17
Cannot see any grad transfer coming to PSU.  Grad transfers want to goto a program where they are guaranteed a NCAA berth, which is probably why they are transferring to begin with.  Only grad transfer to come to PSU would either be not worthy of being taken by the big boys, or some special reason to goto PSU (ie..close to home so parents can see play or some other unique reason).

Maybe.....maybe not.
I think many grad kids are thinking towards a pro career. So...............NBA (or maybe Europe).....more so than NCAA. Kids may want a bigger stage (high quality conference) to prove/improve their professional resume.
PSU has been very good recently in developing "star" players. Newbill, Frazier, Battle.

This is the NC game I will try not to miss.

Florida Southern beat IUP 77-62 for the D2 NC. Florida Southern hit their first 7 3s and ran off to a nice lead. IUP fought very hard all game but could never quite catch up. Game played at Evanston!

And I was thinking you'd rather see 0-27 Grambling vs 0-28 San Jose State.

To the loser goes this "trophy"...

I will explain. I loved hoops my entire life BUT, besides PSU games, anymore I  don't enjoy watching NCAA D1A games very often. I much rather watch a competitive D2 game or a competitive High School game. For example I extremely enjoyed watching the West Virginia AAA HS Championship game the other night on a Pgh channel. I enjoyed that game MUCH more than any Big Dance watching!

BUT I love the trophy!!!!!!!!! I'll tell Cupcake Man  8) about it!!

I have a hard time understanding an event which has the 3 best teams in the same half of the draw!
Geeh, I wonder why they did that????
BUT, it's nice seeing a Pittsburgh kid become a national household name.

And that means D12 out of Philly will win all four boys state titles.

District 12 had all four teams in the AAA and AAAA title games!
I know the eastern part of the state has more teams but  NO district should have teams in both half of the draws!
There should be a better way to equalize each half of the draw!

Howland is good coach that was just a bad fit for UCLA.  I can see him coming back strong at new location.

Agreed!
