Also, we're due for a foreign exempt trip over the summer like the Canada trip in 2008.

My guess is a trip to Argentina. By bus.

I know I'm out of the loop on this, but...

Do they have a limit on how often you can play in these exempt tournaments?  I didn't think you could do it every year. The one caveat may have had something to do with playing a tournament overseas.  Perhaps you cannot play in an exempt tournament IN CONUS in back-to-back seasons.  Maybe that's why the team is going to Puerto Rico.

It used to be 2 every 4 years. They scrapped that rule 5 years ago. Now you can participate every year.

That's the NECSAPAN for you...............ALWAYS thinking of the safety and interests of the players   ::)     ::)      ::)

There is no limit on how often you can play in an exempt tournament.  There is a limit on playing multiple time in any specific tournament (specifically, only once every four years).   Where the tournament is played means nothing for the participating teams (with one minor exception that can't ever apply to Penn State) other than the fact it must be played in Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, the US, or a US territory.

I think what you are confused about is the rule that says you can only go on a foreign tour once every four years.

If it's on Wikipedia, it must be true!

PSU in the 2012 Puerto Rico Tip-Off along w/ Providence, NC St., Southern Mississippi, Akron, Ok St, Xavier and Tennessee

That's a pretty competitive field...maybe no top 10 teams but no slouches either.

How bout Newbill maybe getting a chance to play against his old team?!?!

EDIT: Scratch that. Chris Dobbertean of SBNation filled me in. Xavier is out.

The rest of the field came from a USM poster here.

Even without Xavier, that's a pretty competitive field. NC State has recruited well recently, Oklahoma State has been good, Tennessee has been a better team than anyone expected this year, Southern Miss will be in the tourney this year.

These are also good teams to gauge our progress at that point in the season.  At least half of this field is likely going to either the NIT or NCAA tournament next year.   A good showing and we may be primed for some postseason hoop.
