Totally Disagree. In your situation......... winners were always winners and losers will always be losers. NOT CORRECT.

Tundra, when I challenged our little community a few years back to show examples of this -- mediocre programs moving to the top of the pack -- I daresay I'm the only one who came up with them. Everything else thrown at me seemed like name-calling.

The Big East took advantage of the environment in those days -- the emergence of ESPN amounted to a Cambrian explosion -- but in the 30 years since, I think I ultimately ended up with two programs: Wisconsin and Pitt.

Of course it's not impossible. And I love the positive attitude, it makes things more enjoyable. Even more, as someone who makes his living in advertising, I love your faith is sales and marketing to overcome product deficiencies. You'll keep me fed for a while. :)

There are more than your two examples Tim.  recently Butler, Kansas State, Baylor, San Diego State. Mississippi State does it periodically.

Wow, substance!

Butler and Baylor are two great examples that may join the group. They may already be in it. One of the things that Wisconsin and Pitt did was to survive a coaching change - some evidence that the program had elevated, not that a single coach got sort of lucky. You may be able to throw Gonzaga in there.

I don't mean to change the rules, but back then I was also interested in peers in the sense of running programs the way we hoped to (although the recent thread about cutting kids because they were taking up a scholarship that could go to a better player may have me confused about the way "we" hope to run a program), and I don't count K State in that mix. I don't know enough about San Diego State, but I am skeptical of Fisher.

Oh yes Tim.  Butler may be in the group.   ::)

Sustained performance ... DePaul had a run, even Seton Hall had a run.  That's my point. Obviously, they have been amazing these past few years.
Butler had success with Matta.

Who were we recruiting those players against?  Were Jones and Jackson getting calls from the same types of schools as Thorpe and Jeter?

So why bring it up ? ;)  We are all excited about getting recruits over fellow top tier b10 comp.  Just admit you were chomping at the bit to post that  ;D

Well, I am excited, too. I believe I said that the success we seem on the verge of would be the most solid sign of progress in my 30 years of watching.  But you're right, I don't tire of being right.
sorry tjb my post was directed to lar not u  ;D

I like being a contrarian.    ;D

I think that you will find that it's not unusual for me to contradict a post that I think goes a bit too far out on a limb - no matter what direction that limb is.

I crawl pretty far out on the positive side of the limb when it comes to PSU hoops, but I'll still call someone on the carpet when I think the facts contradict a statement that they are making, even if their position is in the positive direction.

I see the point about Pitt and Wissy, but I personally do not think we have to reach their level to be considered a success. I would be happy with consistently being a bubble team, making the NCAA on average at least every other year and winning a second round game once in a while. Once we are at that level for a while, of course I will want us to take the next step. In other words, I don't think we need to become an annual conference power and frequent national power to be a good program.

Leonard Hamilton did take 3-4 years to get it going at FSU, but I wouldn't mind being on their level in the next 2-3 years. The last six seasons.
2005–2006    Leonard Hamilton    20-10    9-7    NIT Sweet 16
2006–2007    Leonard Hamilton    22-13    7-9    NIT Elite Eight
2007–2008    Leonard Hamilton    19-15    7-9    NIT First Round
2008–2009    Leonard Hamilton    25-10    10-6    NCAA First Round
2009–2010    Leonard Hamilton    22-10    10-6    NCAA First Round
2010–2011    Leonard Hamilton    23-11    11-5    NCAA Sweet 16

Somebody mentioned Mississippi State. I would love to be at that level and content for sure if we were (though a little more success once in the dance would be nice).
2002    Second Round
2003    First Round
2004    Second Round
2005    Second Round
2008    Second Round
2009    First Round

Again, at some point I would like to turn the corner from annual bubble team to a team that annually wins games in the Big Dance, but there are plenty of programs that are not national powers while achieving a level of winning that I would be content with.

It is useless to compare the number rankings of players across different seasons.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but I'm just going to post it here.

The 2013 Class, ranked by Scout.com.

#23 - Rondae Jefferson
#24 - Rysheed Jordan
#49 - Monte Morris
#58 - Jaren Sina
#59 - Terrence Samuel
#62 - Xavier Rathan-Mayes
#63 - Davon Reed
#64 - Josh Hart
#67 - Kris Jenkins
#72 - Brandon Austin
#73 - Devin Williams
#75 - EC Matthews
#81 - Tony Farmer
#84 - Kyle Washington
#93 - Jordan Washington
#94 - Jairus Lyles

We're more involved with some of these guys than others, but more than half of that list has already visited and built a relationship with coach. The Big Ten brings roughly 15 of these type prospects per year. We've only had 1 RSCI Top100 guy in the last decade. I know, it all means nothing until we land some of them, but I think we're going to have one fun summer around here.

Welp, add another one. #54 Dominic Woodson of Vermont Academy. Chambers was at their practice today. They also have talented prospects in Jamel Artis and Daquein McNeil

Anybody catch this tweet from Evan Flood from wisconsin.247sports yesterday? I wonder the 'insider' part of the link says...

Here's what Penn State commit Geno Thorpe told me about Sheldon Jeter and his upcoming decision. #Badgers.

Nothing of real substance other than Geno saying he has talked to Jeter about Penn State, which has been noted on Twitter. No Wisc visit scheduled. Geno thinks it will come down to PSU and UW.

Cool. Thanks for the update.

Might not look like much, but Jeter's team was down 3 starters and had a 3 player bench, two of whom are freshmen.

BTW, for anyone in the Pgh/western PA area, the Pgh Basketball Club is running a showcase tournament at Ambridge High School on Sunday, 1/29. Both Shaler (Thorpe) and Beaver Falls (Jeter) are slated to play, but teams do not face each other. Here's the schedule:

PBC Legends Classic (at Ambridge)

11 am    Highlands vs.  West Allegheny (Micha Mason, Drake recruit, plays for Highlands)
12:30 pm    Lincoln Park vs.  Shaler (Devontae Watson, Temple recruit, for LP; and Thorpe)
2 pm     Massanutten Academy, Va.  vs.  Notre Dame Prep, Mass.
3:30 pm    Sharon vs.  Beaver Falls (Jeter for Beaver Falls)

ND Prep has 7-1 ~itt recruit Adams.

One more thing. Ambridge HS is a good place to watch a game. Large bleachers on each side of the court. Plenty of parking directly next to the gym. Parking was free the couple of times I have been there.
Good chance of see PC in my opinion.

I think you mean the Field House, not the gym in the high school building, although it is nice, too. I'm This event, because it will be honoring legends of western PA basketball and features a "national" match up, will be in the Field House. I've been to a few of these PBC events and parking has always been free.

An added extra bonus for Penn State basketball fans is that Suzie McConnell-Serio is one of the initial "Legends" honorees.
